Chinatown Parks - a Virtual Tour and Update

Lately, it seems like there's been a lot happening at parks in Chinatowns around the country. New public and private investments at unprecedented levels mean new buildings for activities, new gather spaces for the community. As we push forward with our own campaign to rebuild our aging recreation center, we thought we'd take a look and what other cities are doing. 1. Los Angeles: Ord and Yale Park Expansion

Size: Half-acre Terraced Park | Cost: 11.3 million | Completed: 2021 | Timeline: "More than a Decade"

​2. New York: Revamp of East Broadway Mall, Forsyth Plaza, And Kimlau Square

Planning Grant Announced: 2021 | Theater with Street-side Retail, Village Square, bike and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, and street furniture structures for produce vendors.

​3. San Francisco: Portsmouth Square

Cost: $66 million | Timeframe: 2014-2025 | Resilience Center | Lead Agency: ​San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department

​5. San Francisco: Betty Ong Chinese Recreation Center 

Opened: 2012 | Budget: 21 million | Size: 24,234 SF | 3 story recreation center and playground

​6. Oakland: Lincoln Square Park Recreation Center

Stage: Conceptual design development | Recreation Center Renovation | Lead Agency: Oakland Public Works
