Friends of Lincoln Square Park invests in archery set

Archery at Lincoln Square Park

Friends of Lincoln Square Park is committed to supporting park programming, listening to our community, and relying on local data to inform decisions.

Thanks to funding from APEN, we were able to purchase a hoverball archery set for use during Lincoln Summer Nights. As a result, we have been able to bring archery to our youth, many trying out the sport for the first time. Youth, adults and seniors delighted in the new activity throughout our Lincoln Summer Nights season.

This is a tangible example of how we are applying lessons learned from the Aspen Institute’s State of Play: Oakland report to improve the state of play in our city. In the report, archery was ranked as the #1 sport that Oakland youth wanted to try.

In an effort to expand our impact to other neighborhoods, we recently partnered with Civic Design Studios. They brought our archery set to Castlemont High School in East Oakland to share with youth at their Harvest Festival. It was a hit!

A special thanks to Lincoln Park Director Gilbert Gong for the brilliant idea, and the staff of AYPAL who has helped make sure everyone is trained in safe archery practices.
