Public Meeting: Planning Commission
See the latest designs of our new Recreation and Community Resiliency Center in Oakland Chinatown
The City of Oakland and Shah Kawasaki Architects presented the new Lincoln Recreation Center to the Planning Commission on September 20th, 2023. As proposed, the project will entail removing the 7,476 square-foot recreation center and constructing a new, 35-foot tall, 22,221 square-foot recreation center. It will also include the removal and construction of a new basketball court, landscaping, and the latest feature: a bright red modern moon gate entry.
Friends of Lincoln Square Park and Asian Pacific Environmental Network (APEN) volunteers attended to voice our support for this City of Oakland project. Watch the recording (start at 17:10 minutes in). Even the youth in the after school program stopped by to see democracy in action!
The plan was unanimously approved, moving us one step closer to breaking ground!
This exciting milestone follows the recent approval of the City’s 2023-25 budget earlier in the summer, which included capital funding from voter-approved Measure U to help the City close the gap.
Friends of Lincoln Square Park is a volunteer-based community group supporting the City’s efforts to build a larger recreation and community resiliency center to better meet the needs of the community. We invite the public to learn more and get involved in this once-in-a-generation campaign!
